Vintage Ndebele Beaded Apron

Vintage Ndebele Beaded Apron
14” x 18.5”
Rare, vintage and one of a kind, these unique decorative aprons have various purposes - some are given to a would-be wife, who then embroiders. Others are made by mothers and given to unwed daughters who have gone through initiation rites in the tribe. These beaded and embroidered pieces look stunning as wall hangings in the modern home.
The Ndebele are a colorful and fashionably dynamic South African tribe - rooted in Nguni, Zulu and Xhosa tribes. The beautiful and brightly colored geometric shapes are quintessential examples of the Ndebele peoples’ designs, echoed in the decorative patterns painted on the exterior walls of their homes.

Lake Turkana lies within the Kenyan Rift Valley and is the world’s largest permanent desert lake. For me, however, it is the people that inhabit the region that are most inspiring and intriguing. With customs, traditions, beliefs and beauty as deep as the lakes waters, the people – and landscape - of Lake Turkana left me reeling in insignificance.

Our Vintage one of a kind Kuba cloth pillows are made from the leaves of the raffia palm tree which are woven by the men of the tribe on simple vertical looms. The women then adorn them with elaborate embroidered geometric patterns, tie-dye, appliqué, patchwork and drawn-thread work.
Today the Kuba cloth is a collectible piece of African textile.
