Makenge baskets from Zambia are working baskets used in daily life for storage, winnowing and holding water. These unique baskets are an incredible testament to the traditional weaving skills of the Mbundu and Losi women of the remote Western Provence of Zambia. Every basket is handmade, thus one of a kind. Every basket is handmade, thus one of a kind. These baskets are traditionally handed down to new brides as a treasured wedding gift and each basket can take up to two weeks to create.

The extraordinary biography basket tells the story of the masterful women weavers of Eswatini.
As the women work, they braid three strands together, as their mothers and grandmothers have done before them. As they work they sing, in meditation, with joy, some sing in thanks to their ancestors as to have work they must have been blessed by them.
As we follow the creation of a basket from it’s grass roots to it’s completion the story of a life is woven into it’s fibres. The basket tells a story, hour by hour, day by day they transcribe the women’s daily lives that resonate in beautiful harmony with nature. It is a story rich in Eswatini tradition and cultural beliefs that has been infused with modern attitudes and western religion to create a fusion of cultures, a unique way of life.

These cylindrical wooden vessels are carved with great skill by the pastoral Tutsi people who used these vessels to collect milk, honey and carry food. Over the years, as the vessels require repairs, the Tutsi artisans use metal pieces to restore their functionality as they pass them down from generation to generation. The intricate metal patching results in preserving a unique and functional piece of art adding to its intrinsic value.
